Fremont Crit 3

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

3 down and 2 to go! Good race, no crashes. There was one guy that
flatted that almost took some people out. Dan dropped down to the
younger group and it’s good he did because it started raining balls
later in the day. It was nice to have a team for once.

A new team controlled the front of the pack today and set a very fast
pace at the start. We had shattered the pack in the first lap into 3
groups and I think some of the riders were dropped. On the second to
last lap, Dan and I put out a huge attack and split the pack in two,
but it didn’t hold. After the attack, we did some recovering and
weren’t set up well for the sprint.

Second Race recap

Monday, January 11th, 2010

Survived race 2! Came in 4th or 5th. I think 5th, but it was pretty
close. I didn’t have anything left at the end, maybe because of the
4.5 hour ride I did yesterday with 6000 ft of climbing.

There were 3 crashes today and I saw 2 of them. The first one took
down a large chunk of the pack and and I was just in front of it so I
rolled away safe. I didn’t see the second one, but someone went down
in turn two, but it didn’t sound like it took anyone else out.

The final crash was after the race was over. We had just done the
sprint and I was going to congratulate the guy who took 2nd, who I had
made friends with the previous week. He and his team of 3 others were
controlling the race the whole time and I hung out with them for most
of the time and he was cool enough to let me in after I took pulls.
We bonded last week when we were waiting in line for the bathroom before the race and both missed
the start, but caught on after the first turn.

So I was heading over to him and he was looking over to me to also
talk about the race and some dude cut across in front of him to get
into the parking lot and took out his wheel. I’m assuming this kid is
pretty strong because he must have finished with the lead pack, but it
was a pretty rookie mistake. He thought we were supposed to go into
that parking lot for the post-race talk, but it was like 300m up.

I hope Willie is OK and I’m hoping to survive Cat 5 for 3 more weeks.

First race

Did my first race yesterday! Freemont early bird criterium. No
crashes and got some bike handling skills. Got somewhere around 12th
place, but we weren’t keeping track. I’ll work on sitting in more for
next time.

Huge record before Christmas break. I did it at just over 275W and
was weighing well around 135lbs. Got a little fat over the break, but
my power is still good and I’m putting on endurance miles. Hopefully
I should be ready to rock for racing this year.

Mt. Diablo

Monday, November 16th, 2009

Awesome climb yesterday. It was run as a TT and I had the benefit of
starting 15 seconds after Dan, which helped with the pacing of the
climb. I put up under 64 min when I was shooting for 65 min.

Nice picture of Dan on the right cruising past the others and me in the background in the pain cave in persuit.

LKHC Week #5: Montevina

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

Absolutely brutal hill climb today on Montevina. It starts out a hard
9.5% for 3 miles and kicks it up to over 14% for the next .3 miles and
then finishes even steeper. I put up close to 100 points which was my
goal. Next week should be even more fun with a chunk of road that is
15% for a mile followed by 18% for .3 miles. Hooray!

Palantir was the 6th place team thanks to the hard work of my
teammates. Which put us up a ways in the overall team score as well.

Also, I have ordered the bike I had been coveting.

Week 3 LKHC

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

After week 3 we are ahead of Google by just shy of 10 points.  Sadly I couldn’t make it out on Saturday because I had the flu.  The team did well and broke 200 points.  This will be the score we drop.   Now we just need 3 or 4 more solid performances and we should be all set.
